Massive Explosion Rocks Essex as Fertilizer Blast Destroys Fire Engines

A large explosion ripped through an industrial unit in Rettendon, Essex, on July 24, turning a building fire into a major incident that shook homes up to 15 miles away. The blast was triggered by fertilizer stored inside one of the units as the initial fire took hold and rapidly spread to multiple buildings and a nearby field. Thick black smoke poured into the sky while the force of the explosion destroyed three fire engines at the scene. Residents across the county described a loud boom that rattled windows and felt like a bomb had gone off.

More than 100 firefighters rushed to the Southend Road site to battle the intense blaze. Twenty crew members were taken to hospital for checks, including assessments for hearing loss, though all were later discharged. Officials confirmed there was no wider risk to the public once the situation stabilized. Aerial footage captured the scale of the inferno as flames and smoke dominated the landscape around the village.

Fire crews worked through the night and brought the fire under control by the following morning. The rapid response prevented the flames from spreading further into residential areas despite the challenging conditions created by the fertilizer explosion. The incident left a clear reminder of how quickly industrial storage can turn a routine fire into a dangerous and widespread emergency.
