At least 13 people were killed and 98 injured when a train carrying approximately 250 passengers derailed in southern Mexico, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred in Oaxaca state on the Interoceanic Train, a newly built Pacific-Atlantic rail corridor inaugurated in 2023 to enhance trade and regional connectivity.

A 50-second video filmed by a survivor in the rear car shows derailed wagons scattered amid hills and greenery. The survivor described efforts to aid fellow passengers while expressing relief that their family had escaped serious harm. The footage also conveys a sense that the train may have been traveling at excessive speed prior to the derailment.

Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene, providing medical assistance and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals. Local officials are investigating the cause of the crash, examining potential mechanical failures, track conditions, and operational protocols.

The Interoceanic Train was designed to boost Mexico’s domestic and international trade by linking the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, but the derailment raises questions about safety measures and emergency preparedness on the corridor. Authorities have pledged a thorough investigation and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.

As recovery and relief efforts continue, officials are focusing on both immediate medical care for the injured and long-term safety assessments to prevent similar accidents on the country’s expanding rail network.
