The Israel Defense Forces has released bodycam footage, shown publicly for the first time, capturing the moment Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon came under attack from a Hezbollah first-person-view drone. The video shows troops in combat gear moving through rubble-strewn terrain, spotting the small drone overhead, and opening rifle fire at it before an orange explosion erupts nearby. Hebrew-language warnings for graphic content appear at the start of the clip, and the footage captures the soldiers' immediate, instinctive reaction to the incoming threat rather than a staged or after-the-fact reconstruction. Footage of this kind, showing an attack from the perspective of the targeted soldiers themselves, has rarely been made public by the IDF during the ongoing conflict in Lebanon.

The release comes against the backdrop of a drone war that has increasingly defined the fighting in southern Lebanon throughout 2026. Hezbollah has leaned heavily on FPV drones, many guided by fiber-optic cables that make them effectively immune to the electronic jamming systems Israel typically relies on to counter aerial threats. These drones have proven capable of directly targeting individual soldiers and vehicles with striking precision, a marked departure from the larger, less accurate rocket and missile attacks that defined earlier phases of the conflict. Israeli officials and reporting from Israeli media have acknowledged that the military has struggled to adapt quickly enough to this threat, even though the danger posed by FPV drones has been understood within defense circles for years.

The human cost of this shift has been significant. In April, a Hezbollah FPV drone struck Israeli soldiers repairing a tank in the town of Taybeh, killing one soldier and wounding six others, the first fatal FPV strike of its kind against Israeli forces in the current fighting. Other incidents throughout the spring and summer, including night-vision-guided drone strikes, have added to a steady toll of casualties among troops operating in the security zone along the border. Hezbollah has periodically released its own footage of these attacks as propaganda, timed in several cases to coincide with diplomatic developments or ceasefire negotiations, turning the drone campaign into as much a messaging tool as a military one.

The newly released IDF footage offers a rare look at the other side of that exchange, showing how Israeli troops on the ground actually experience and respond to these attacks in real time. It underscores a broader vulnerability that has emerged during the conflict: cheap, hard-to-detect drones capable of threatening even well-equipped soldiers and armored vehicles at close range. With fighting continuing under what has often been described as a porous ceasefire, both sides have kept up drone operations in southern Lebanon, and footage like this is likely to keep surfacing as each side documents, and publicizes, its version of the fight.
