Dozens of Wild Brown Bears Descend on Alaska Falls for Epic Salmon Feast

The mass salmon migration is once again underway at Brooks Falls in Alaska, and it's turning a quiet stretch of river inside Katmai National Park into one of nature's wildest dinner parties. Each year from late June through late July, as many as 50 coastal brown bears converge on the six-foot waterfall to intercept salmon fighting their way upstream. The bears pack away over 120 pounds of fish a day during this critical window, building up the fat reserves they will need to survive the long Alaskan winter hibernation ahead.

The falls have become a genuine ecosystem spectacle, with bald eagles swooping in to grab leftover scraps and gulls squabbling noisily over whatever the bears leave behind. Familiar faces are already showing up on camera, including the yearling cub belonging to Bear #907, who can be seen watching the chaotic scene unfold from the safety of the riverbank. Nature lovers around the world are once again tuning into explore.org's live bear cams, including the popular Brooks Falls main feed and the bear's-eye-view Low cam, sharing laughs online over the bears' chaotic, buffet-style feeding frenzy.

Beyond the entertainment value, wildlife experts note that the annual gathering highlights a remarkably efficient natural cycle: the salmon runs sustain the bears through the harsh winter months, while the bears in turn help redistribute nutrients from the river back into the surrounding forest ecosystem. For now, though, the real draw is the show itself, dozens of massive brown bears jostling for prime fishing spots at the base of the falls, snapping up sockeye salmon mid-leap in scenes that never fail to captivate viewers tuning in from thousands of miles away.
