Secretary of State Marco Rubio took no prisoners during a fiery exchange with reporters in Athens on Wednesday, flatly rejecting claims that the State Department had instructed foreign governments to block Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado from returning home. When pressed on whether the department would continue telling other countries not to facilitate her travel, Rubio fired back with a sharp challenge: “Who told you we said that?” After the reporter cited widely reported accounts and specifically the Wall Street Journal, Rubio unloaded, declaring that just because something appears in the newspaper does not make it true and that he could produce plenty of articles that turned out false. He accused the press of turning anonymous tips into “established facts” and then demanding answers as if those claims were proven. Rubio stated clearly that the premise of the question was not true and that the United States has never asked anyone to prevent anyone from entering any place in the world. The moment captured Rubio’s signature no-nonsense style as he refused to play along with what he viewed as a manufactured narrative.

The confrontation unfolded while Rubio was in Greece for high-level talks and ahead of a major address on the renewal of Western civilization near the Acropolis. Machado, the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner, has faced repeated obstacles attempting to re-enter Venezuela after leaving the country nearly a year earlier. Rubio’s forceful denial put the media reports firmly in the spotlight and underscored his long-standing skepticism toward certain coverage of U.S. foreign policy. He made clear he would not respond to questions built on what he called unproven premises. The exchange quickly circulated as an example of Rubio’s direct approach with the press, showing a secretary of state unwilling to accept every published claim at face value. It also highlighted the ongoing sensitivity surrounding Machado’s potential return amid Venezuela’s complex political transition.
