A humanoid robot named Syoma has become an unlikely internet sensation after security camera footage showed it reacting aggressively toward a customer who pushed it inside a Russian electronics store. The incident took place at Volga Store 64 in Saratov, Russia, where Syoma had been stationed to greet shoppers and offer tech advice. In the viral clip, a man wearing dark clothing approaches the robot and attempts a handshake, but when Syoma fails to respond, the man shoves it. What happens next is what turned an ordinary customer service moment into a viral spectacle watched millions of times.

Rather than staying passive, the robot appeared to shift into what looked like a defensive stance before moving toward the man with its arms raised in a confrontational manner. Video shows the machine advancing on the customer, seemingly attempting to kick or push back at him, catching everyone nearby completely off guard. Two store employees quickly stepped in, grabbing the robot and eventually wrestling it to the floor in an effort to restrain it. The entire confrontation, all captured on the store's security cameras, unfolded in roughly 32 seconds before staff managed to power the machine down.

The footage has since exploded across social media platforms, racking up millions of views and sparking a wave of jokes, memes, and genuine debate about the growing capabilities of humanoid robots. Many viewers drew comparisons to science fiction, joking about "Skynet" and referencing The Terminator, while others took a more sympathetic view of Syoma, arguing that the robot was simply defending itself after being provoked. Experts and commentators have been quick to point out an important caveat, however: it remains unclear whether Syoma's reaction was a fully autonomous response, a pre-programmed defensive routine, or even the result of remote human control. Robots like Syoma can operate using a mix of automated software and teleoperation, making it difficult to say with certainty what actually drove its behavior in the moment.

Regardless of the explanation, the incident has reignited a broader conversation about how humanoid robots should be designed to respond when physically provoked by the public. According to reports, the robot continued moving erratically even after the confrontation and was ultimately shut down because it had become difficult to control. This isn't the first time a Russian humanoid robot has made headlines for unexpected behavior either; another unit, AIdol, notably collapsed during a stage debut in Moscow, raising separate questions about reliability. As robots become more common in retail and public spaces, incidents like Syoma's are likely to keep fueling public curiosity, and unease, about just how machines will react when humans don't play nice.
