Multiple airstrikes struck positions linked to the Iran-backed Al-Nujabaa militia north of Baghdad, targeting headquarters facilities in the al-Naba'i area. Video footage circulating from the scene shows several large explosions followed by thick plumes of smoke rising above the targeted compounds, indicating significant damage to militia infrastructure.

Al-Nujabaa is a Shiite militant group closely aligned with Iran and operates as part of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), a coalition of paramilitary organizations that have played a major role in Iraq’s security landscape. The group has been responsible for more than 100 attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria since October 2023, using rockets, drones, and other weapons in an ongoing campaign against American military presence in the region.

The latest strikes appear to be a direct response to a March 14 missile attack targeting the U.S. embassy compound in Baghdad. That incident heightened tensions between U.S. forces and Iranian-backed militias operating across Iraq. By striking Al-Nujabaa positions, the operation signals a willingness to retaliate against groups believed to be responsible for attacks on American personnel and diplomatic facilities.

Initial reports indicate that three to four militia members may have been killed in the strike, though official casualty confirmations remain limited. The operation itself has not been formally claimed, but analysts note that the precision targeting and timing strongly align with ongoing U.S. military responses against Iranian proxy networks across the region.

These developments occur amid a broader campaign aimed at weakening Iranian-backed militias operating in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon. The increasing tempo of strikes reflects escalating regional tensions, with the United States and its allies seeking to deter further attacks while maintaining pressure on networks that threaten Western and allied interests. However, such actions also raise the possibility of wider proxy conflict, as Iranian-aligned groups continue to mobilize across multiple fronts in response to ongoing military operations.
