It was supposed to be an ordinary Saturday afternoon on the roads of San Jose, until a small plane came screaming out of the sky and slammed nose-first into the intersection of Capitol Expressway and Excalibur Drive on October 17, 2026. The 1968 Cessna 177A Cardinal, operated by Flying Twenty Inc., a nonprofit flight club for San Jose State University students, alumni and faculty, went down just after 3 p.m., only minutes after taking off from nearby Reid-Hillview Airport. Reports say the pilot had radioed trouble with the engine, and the aircraft came down in a busy stretch of road instead of making it back to a runway. Two adults and a child were on board, and all three were taken to the hospital with injuries that fire officials described as non-life-threatening. Somehow, the plane did not hit a single vehicle or person on the ground, a stroke of luck that stunned neighbors who watched the wreckage settle.

The crash was still a mess for the neighborhood, with a minor fuel spill that crews quickly contained and absorbed, plus major traffic disruption while firefighters and police secured the scene and cleared the wreckage. One longtime resident said he has lived nearby for about 60 years and has seen aircraft trouble around Reid-Hillview before, but never anything landing this close to his home. The official cause has not been announced, and investigators are still working to understand why the engine problems turned into an emergency landing that failed. That leaves big questions hanging over the case, including what exactly went wrong in those first minutes, how the pilot picked this intersection, and how close the crowded roadway came to a far worse ending. It also puts a fresh spotlight on the risks of small planes flying out of airports surrounded by homes, shops and busy streets.
