The US Consumer Price Index climbed 0.6 percent in September from the previous month and 3.7 percent over the past year, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Gasoline prices surged 9.1 percent during the month and accounted for more than half of the overall monthly increase, reversing recent signs of cooling inflation. The annual rate accelerated from 3.4 percent in August, slightly exceeding the 3.6 percent consensus forecast among economists. Core CPI, which excludes the volatile food and energy categories, rose 0.3 percent for the month and reached 2.6 percent on a year-over-year basis, also coming in above the 2.5 percent expectation. Energy costs overall jumped 5.2 percent as geopolitical tensions continued to push fuel prices higher. Shelter costs and several other categories contributed to the broader upward pressure. The hotter-than-expected readings have immediately drawn attention to the path of Federal Reserve policy in the near term.

Analysts note that the sharp rise in gasoline alone was enough to dominate the monthly headline figure, yet the core measure also showed firmness that points to more widespread price pressures. Food prices held relatively steady while categories such as used cars, airline fares, and recreation posted gains. The data arrives against a backdrop of elevated energy costs linked to ongoing international conflicts that have disrupted supply. Markets and policymakers will now weigh whether the acceleration represents a temporary energy shock or a more persistent inflation problem. The Federal Reserve had been navigating a delicate balance between supporting growth and containing prices, and this report raises fresh questions about the timing of any further rate adjustments. Consumers are likely to feel the impact most directly at the pump, where prices have risen substantially over the past year. Officials will continue monitoring upcoming data releases for signs of whether the upward momentum eases or builds further.
