U.S. and Ecuadorian forces carried out a coordinated maritime operation on August 28, intercepting and ultimately sinking a vessel believed to be serving as a floating refueling station for drug traffickers operating in the Eastern Pacific. The operation was directed by SOUTHCOM Commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan and carried out by Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere, working in direct coordination with the Government of Ecuador. According to officials, intelligence had already linked the vessel to Los Choneros, a violent Ecuadorian criminal organization previously sanctioned by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization. The ship's role, refueling smaller trafficking boats at sea, made it a key logistical asset for moving narcotics through the region.

The boarding itself was carried out by U.S. Marines and Sailors launched from the USS San Antonio, an amphibious transport dock ship stationed in the area. Forces interdicted, boarded, searched, and cleared the vessel without incident, a detail officials emphasized as evidence of a controlled and orderly operation. Individuals found aboard the ship were safely removed and escorted back to Ecuador rather than detained at sea, reflecting the close cooperation between American and Ecuadorian authorities throughout the mission. Once the vessel had been fully cleared and confirmed empty, U.S. forces sank it, permanently removing it from the trafficking network's operations.

Officials framed the strike as more than a single successful mission, describing it as a direct hit against the broader logistics chain that keeps narco-trafficking networks running across the Western Hemisphere. Gen. Donovan characterized the operation as proof that the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition, a partnership formed earlier this year between the U.S. and regional allies, is capable of dismantling the sophisticated methods traffickers use to move drugs undetected. He credited the success specifically to cooperation with Ecuadorian partners, describing the outcome as a decisive blow against an operation responsible for moving substantial quantities of drugs through the region. The Department of War echoed that sentiment, framing the mission as part of a sustained campaign to defend the U.S. homeland from narco-terrorist threats.

This latest interdiction adds to a growing pattern of U.S. military operations targeting cartel infrastructure at sea, particularly since Los Choneros and a related criminal group were formally designated foreign terrorist organizations by the State Department last year. By eliminating a refueling point rather than simply intercepting a single drug shipment, officials suggest the operation could have a broader ripple effect on the group's ability to move product efficiently across the Eastern Pacific. Whether this specific strike meaningfully disrupts the larger flow of narcotics into the United States remains to be seen, but it represents another visible escalation in the military's expanding role in counter-cartel operations throughout Latin America.
