Israel Aerospace Industries has successfully completed the maiden flight of its first Airbus A330-300BDSF, marking a major step in converting a former passenger jet into a dedicated freighter. The aircraft took off from Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv and completed a test flight lasting more than an hour as part of the certification campaign. The conversion gives the jet a maximum payload of 61 tons and capacity for up to 30 standard cargo containers on the main deck. Modifications included installing a large forward cargo door, reinforcing the floor structure, and removing passenger cabin equipment. This achievement expands IAI’s passenger-to-freighter portfolio beyond its established Boeing conversions. Company leaders described the flight as a key validation of months of structural work and ground testing. The program is now advancing toward Supplemental Type Certificates expected later this year.
With this successful first flight, IAI joins a select group of global firms capable of converting both Airbus and Boeing widebody platforms into freighters. The A330-300BDSF is designed for regional and medium-haul cargo routes where operators need efficient payload capacity and faster turnaround times. An advanced cargo handling system and optimized layout are intended to improve loading efficiency compared with traditional configurations. The prototype is a former passenger aircraft that underwent extensive rework at IAI facilities in Israel. Industry observers note that the growing demand for mid-size freighters makes the conversion program strategically timed. As flight testing continues, the company is positioning the aircraft for commercial service once full certification is secured. This milestone strengthens IAI’s standing in the competitive air cargo conversion market.
