Anduril Industries is making a massive bet on America's submarine fleet, committing 3.7 billion dollars of its own money to build Arsenal-2, a sprawling, software-defined shipyard rising at Tradepoint Atlantic in Sparrows Point, Maryland. Spanning more than two million square feet on the site of the old Bethlehem Steel plant, the facility will manufacture complex components and large-scale assemblies for Virginia-class attack submarines before shipping them off for final assembly at General Dynamics Electric Boat and Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News yard. A newly released promotional video leans hard into that futuristic vision, showing massive hull sections gliding down assembly lines inside gleaming manufacturing halls while workers operate advanced robotics and equipment. The investment forms the backbone of a 6.6 billion dollar partnership with the US Navy, which has pledged up to 2.9 billion dollars in contract payments tied directly to production milestones.

The timing could not be more urgent, the Navy currently needs two to three new Virginia-class submarines every year but is only managing around one, a shortfall that has strained America's undersea fleet and its AUKUS commitments to Australia and the United Kingdom. Once fully running around 2030, Arsenal-2 is expected to add roughly 9 million labor hours annually to the submarine industrial base, a boost officials say could lift Virginia-class production by about 15 percent. The project is also projected to create more than 3,100 direct jobs and support thousands more indirectly, with Maryland and Baltimore County chipping in matching incentives to help get the shipyard off the ground. For a region once defined by shuttered steel mills, Arsenal-2 is being pitched as nothing less than a rebirth of American shipbuilding muscle at a moment the Navy badly needs it.
