A bizarre scene unfolded on the tarmac at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California, on Tuesday evening, October 6, when a Delta Air Lines passenger slipped through an unguarded access door near Gate 12 and onto the active airfield. The man, identified by the Orange County Sheriff's Department as 26-year-old Skyler Jay Barr of Everett, Washington, climbed into an Alaska Airlines tug, a vehicle normally used to tow aircraft and baggage carts, and drove it erratically across the tarmac. Video captured by a bystander shows Barr maneuvering the tug dangerously close to parked aircraft and the taxiway as a ramp worker approached on foot. The joyride ended when Barr crashed the tug into another vehicle near Gate 7.

Rather than stopping there, Barr then attempted to commandeer an American Airlines lavatory service truck before airport police caught up with him and placed him under arrest on charges of vehicle theft, trespassing and vandalism. The security breach prompted air traffic controllers to issue a temporary ground stop while crews inspected the taxiway between Gates 7 and 12 for debris or other hazards, briefly halting aircraft movement at the airport. Operations returned to normal within roughly 10 minutes, and Barr's own Seattle-bound flight was reportedly unaffected, departing nine minutes early and landing 20 minutes ahead of schedule. Delta said it was cooperating with investigators, while Alaska Airlines noted the tug itself belonged to ground handling contractor Alliance Ground International.
