Türkiye has put its Bayraktar AKINCI strike drone through a high-stakes live-fire demonstration, testing it alongside two of the country's most advanced precision-guidance systems, the LGK-82 laser guidance kit and the GÖZDE terminal guidance system. The AKINCI is a heavy combat drone capable of hauling up to 1.5 tonnes of payload, and its ability to launch precision munitions is central to how Turkish defense planners see it being used in future operations. During the demonstration, held at the Konya Karapınar Firing Test Range, the AKINCI released an LGK-82 that struck an armored personnel carrier directly, while a separate GÖZDE-guided munition was fired at a target moving at 50 km/h and hit it as well. Military officials from more than 15 countries reportedly attended the event, underscoring the international attention these systems are drawing.

The two guidance technologies serve different but complementary roles in turning ordinary bombs into precision weapons. The LGK-82 is designed to convert conventional, unguided bombs into laser-guided munitions, essentially bolting precision onto weapons that would otherwise fall with much less accuracy. GÖZDE, developed by ASELSAN in cooperation with TÜBİTAK SAGE, handles the trickier job of terminal guidance and trajectory correction in the final moments of an engagement, which is exactly what allowed it to track and strike a fast-moving target during the test. Together, these systems let a single drone platform hit both stationary infrastructure and moving vehicles with a level of precision that would have required far more expensive, purpose-built munitions in the past.

What makes this demonstration significant isn't just the successful hits, but what it reveals about Türkiye's broader defense strategy. The country has spent years building out a fully domestic ecosystem that spans drone platforms, guided munitions, and the precision-guidance technology that ties them together, reducing reliance on imported weapons systems. AKINCI has already been tested with a growing family of Turkish-made munitions in prior campaigns, including guided bombs and stand-off weapons, and this latest test adds LGK-82 and GÖZDE to that expanding list of proven combinations. That kind of integration, where a single drone can carry and deploy multiple types of precision weapons interchangeably, gives commanders significant tactical flexibility on the battlefield.

The success of this test also reflects the growing scale of Türkiye's defense industry as a whole. Five Turkish companies, Baykar, ASELSAN, Roketsan, TUSAŞ, and STM, are currently listed among the Defense News Top 100 ranking of the world's largest defense companies, a marker of just how far the country's arms industry has grown in recent years. Turkish-made defense products, including drones like the AKINCI, are now exported to buyers across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, making Türkiye one of the more prominent players in the global unmanned systems market. As these guidance technologies continue to prove themselves in live testing, they're likely to become an even bigger part of that export portfolio going forward.
