Providence police officials disclosed that a single tip prompted federal authorities to identify and detain a person of interest in the December 13, 2025, mass shooting at Brown University that left two students dead and nine others injured.

During a press conference, investigators explained that the individual was flagged after an anonymous tip was submitted through standard channels. Police emphasized that the tip was handled no differently than other leads initially received in the case.

According to officials, the FBI took primary responsibility for following up on that specific tip. Federal agents subsequently located and detained the individual, who was identified publicly as a person of interest. However, authorities later released him after determining there was insufficient evidence to support charges or continued detention.

“We are detectives just like the others,” a Providence police representative said, explaining that the tip was one of many reviewed as part of the investigation. Officials confirmed that no physical evidence or definitive linkage to the shooting was established in connection with the detained individual.

Law enforcement leaders stressed that the release does not rule out the possibility of future developments but acknowledged the challenges of managing a high-profile investigation with limited actionable evidence.

The case remains active, and the shooter has not been identified publicly. Authorities continue to pursue additional leads while urging the public to submit any relevant information.

The episode has drawn scrutiny from some observers, who argue the focus on a single tip may have temporarily diverted investigative resources. Police and federal officials have not commented on operational critiques, reiterating that all credible leads must be examined in the immediate aftermath of a mass-casualty incident.
