Moscow woke up to fire and smoke on Sunday after Ukraine launched what officials there are calling the largest drone and missile barrage the Russian capital has ever faced. Hundreds of drones, roughly 450 by the Moscow mayor's count, were aimed squarely at the city, with Russian defenses claiming to have shot down well over a thousand of them across the country overnight. Even so, several got through, slamming into the Gazprom-owned Moscow Oil Refinery and setting off a blaze that sent thick black smoke rising over the skyline, visible for miles. A residential building was also struck, and regional officials say at least two people were killed and roughly 20 others injured, including children.

President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the refinery was a deliberate target, tying the strike directly to Russia's war effort by hitting the fuel and logistics network that keeps Moscow's military machine running. The attack landed on the final day of Russia's parliamentary elections, a timing Moscow's mayor called no coincidence, accusing Kyiv of trying to disrupt the vote. Ukraine has not confirmed that the election was a target, but the scale of the assault, hitting deep inside Russian territory and striking one of the region's most important fuel suppliers, shows just how far Kyiv's long-range strike capability has come. With smoke still rising from the refinery hours later, the attack stands as one of the most damaging blows Ukraine has landed on the Russian capital since the war began.
