A fast-moving snow squall brought blustering winds and bursts of heavy snow to parts of upstate New York, prompting state officials to issue safety alerts as hazardous winter conditions continue to affect large portions of the state. New Yorkโ€™s Division of Homeland Security warned residents of persistent lake effect snow bands forming off Lakes Erie and Ontario, creating rapidly changing travel conditions and reduced visibility.

Forecasts indicate that Erie County could receive between one and three inches of snow on January 19, accompanied by wind gusts reaching up to 47 miles per hour. While overall snowfall totals may appear modest, officials emphasized that the intensity of snow squalls can cause sudden whiteout conditions, icy road surfaces, and dangerous driving environments within minutes.

The lake effect system is expected to generate scattered snow showers across much of New York, with localized heavier bands impacting areas downwind of the Great Lakes. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through January 21, signaling the potential for continued disruptions, particularly during peak commuting hours.

State emergency officials urged motorists to slow down, increase following distances, and remain alert for abrupt weather changes. Residents were also advised to secure loose outdoor items, prepare emergency kits, and monitor official weather updates as wind-driven snow continues to shift rapidly across regions.

The snow squall serves as another reminder of the volatility of winter weather in the Northeast, where brief but intense systems can pose serious risks despite relatively low accumulation totals. Authorities continue to monitor conditions closely and stand ready to respond should the storm intensify further.
