Rescue teams near Lake Tahoe recovered eight skiers killed in an avalanche on February 17, 2026, with officials fearing a ninth missing skier also perished. The incident occurred near Castle Peak in California’s Sierra Nevada, marking the deadliest avalanche in state history and the fourth deadliest in U.S. records.

The victims were part of a guided backcountry skiing group of 15. Despite avalanche warnings issued since February 15 due to heavy snowfall and high winds, the group proceeded with their three-day trek. Six members survived, either by self-rescue or being dug out by rescuers. The tragedy has raised questions about risk management and decision-making in guided outdoor tours, particularly under hazardous conditions.

Avalanches are a persistent risk in the Sierra Nevada and other mountainous regions. According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, avalanches in the U.S. cause roughly 30 deaths annually, many of which could be prevented with proper training, equipment such as beacons and shovels, and adherence to weather advisories.

This event underscores the dangers of backcountry skiing and the critical importance of preparedness, route assessment, and awareness of current conditions. Emergency responders highlighted the rapid mobilization of search and rescue teams, who worked through challenging terrain and conditions to locate and recover victims.

The Castle Peak avalanche serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks of winter mountain sports, the importance of respecting safety warnings, and the need for heightened vigilance during periods of heavy snowfall and high winds.
