Distracted Driver Slams Into Stopped Car, Nearly Kills El Paso Officer

A routine traffic stop on Interstate 10 East turned into a harrowing near-miss on July 25, 2026, after a distracted driver plowed into a stopped vehicle just feet from an El Paso Police Department motorcycle officer. The officer had activated emergency lights and was standing on the shoulder near mile marker 34 in far East El Paso, reviewing the identification of a driver he had pulled over, when a second vehicle approaching from behind failed to control its speed. The out-of-control car narrowly missed the officer before slamming into the rear of the stopped vehicle with such force that it was propelled roughly 500 feet farther down the shoulder.

Both the motorcycle officer and the driver of the stopped vehicle were injured in the collision, though authorities confirmed that neither sustained life-threatening harm; the stopped driver was transported to a hospital for treatment. The at-fault driver was cited for failure to control speed causing a collision, though police have not released the names or ages of anyone involved in the incident. Body-worn camera footage later released by the department captured the frightening sequence of events, offering the public a rare and unsettling look at just how quickly a routine stop can turn dangerous.

In its statement, the El Paso Police Department underscored that the officer's emergency lights were clearly activated at the time of the stop, and reminded drivers that Texas law requires motorists to move over or slow down when approaching any vehicle displaying emergency lights. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face during even the most routine encounters, and highlights the potentially life-saving importance of the state's move-over law. Authorities are continuing to emphasize driver awareness as the department reviews the footage and finalizes its investigation into the crash.
