Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) is pushing back against claims of widespread food shortages in Gaza, pointing to reported aid deliveries, operating bakeries and community kitchens as evidence of increased food availability. According to COGAT, more than 2.2 million tons of food have entered the Gaza Strip since the October 2025 ceasefire, with hundreds of trucks reportedly delivering supplies each day. The Israeli agency says that 70–80% of these trucks carry food, while 41 bakeries produce more than three million pita breads daily and approximately 100 kitchens continue preparing meals. COGAT also cites an reported 83% drop in food prices, along with observations of uncollected food parcels and statements from Gaza’s Bakers Association, to support its position that food supplies have improved. Major Ross, deputy head of COGAT’s International Relations Branch, has highlighted the deliveries in a video showing trucks carrying fresh food into the territory.

However, the availability of food supplies does not necessarily mean every family can obtain enough nutritious food at an affordable price, and the broader humanitarian picture remains contested. United Nations-backed food security assessments have reported improvements since the ceasefire while warning that conditions remain fragile, with around 1.4 million people expected to face crisis-level food insecurity or worse during the second half of 2026. Recent reports have also highlighted disruptions to commercial deliveries following a dispute involving Gaza merchants and Hamas, raising fresh concerns about market access and the continuity of supplies. COGAT maintains that Israel will continue facilitating humanitarian aid, but aid volumes, commercial imports, distribution, affordability and access all remain critical factors in determining whether assistance reaches the people who need it. The central question is therefore not only how much food enters Gaza, but also whether supplies are consistently available and accessible to civilians throughout the territory.
