In a pre‑dawn maritime operation on January 15, 2026, U.S. Southern Command forces seized the Venezuelan‑linked oil tanker Veronica in the Caribbean Sea as part of a sustained enforcement campaign against illicit petroleum shipments. Marines and sailors from Joint Task Force Southern Spear, launched from the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, conducted a helicopter‑assisted boarding and took control of the vessel without incident, according to official statements.

The action marks the sixth such tanker interdiction by U.S. forces under President Trump’s sanctions enforcement regime targeting Venezuela’s oil sector, which Washington alleges is operating in defiance of a quarantine on sanctioned vessels imposed under the administration’s broader strategy. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the tanker had previously transited Venezuelan waters and was violating established rules designed to prevent illicit exports.

The operation was conducted in coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Justice, reflecting a multi‑agency effort to uphold sanctions and disrupt “shadow fleet” activity — maritime networks that move crude oil in violation of U.S. restrictions. Footage released by Southern Command shows troops fast‑roping onto the ship from helicopters, a technique used in prior interdictions. :

Officials framed the seizure as lawful enforcement, emphasizing that only oil shipments that are “coordinated properly and lawfully” will be permitted to leave Venezuela. This campaign has continued amid heightened U.S.‑Venezuela tensions following a dramatic U.S. operation earlier in January that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, after which the administration signaled an intent to assert greater control over the country’s oil resources.

The capture of the Veronica underscores the Trump administration’s commitment to rigorous sanctions enforcement and its use of combined military and law enforcement resources to constrain illicit revenue streams that Washington argues fund destabilizing activities. Observers note that repeated tanker seizures could significantly disrupt sanctioned oil flows, reshape regional maritime activity, and reinforce U.S. leverage in ongoing diplomatic and economic pressure campaigns against Maduro‑linked networks.
