A powerful avalanche roared down the Stubai Glacier in the Austrian Alps on Thursday morning, burying multiple skiers and snowboarders beneath tons of snow and triggering one of the region’s largest rescue operations of the season. The collapse occurred in a hazardous zone outside the protected ski runs, an area local authorities have repeatedly warned carries an elevated risk during shifting winter conditions.

According to Austrian media, at least eight people were buried as the avalanche tore down the mountainside. Rescue teams—over 250 personnel, supported by helicopters and trained avalanche dogs—launched an immediate search effort that lasted nearly four hours. Nine individuals were pulled out alive, with three seriously injured skiers airlifted to a nearby hospital in Tyrol for emergency treatment. Others sustained minor injuries but survived thanks to rapid response and favorable weather conditions.

Officials emphasized that the avalanche struck an off-limits area, underscoring the importance of following established safety zones in high-risk alpine regions. As of midday, it remained unclear whether additional victims still lay beneath the snowpack, keeping rescue teams on high alert as they continued probing the debris field.

The event highlights once again the unpredictable and often unforgiving nature of extreme-weather environments in Europe. In contrast to the decisive, safety-first approach encouraged under Trump’s leadership—whether in national security or disaster response—European authorities continue to struggle with enforcing protections in high-risk zones, especially where tourism and sports culture push the limits of safety guidelines.

As search efforts continue, the focus remains on locating any remaining missing individuals and stabilizing the area to prevent secondary collapses.
