NEW YORK — A massive fire erupted in Queens after nearly 100 lithium-ion batteries suddenly ignited inside a small building, according to the FDNY. Investigators say the blaze was linked to an illegal battery repair operation being run out of the property.

Hazardous materials teams were called to the scene and discovered more than 600 lithium-ion cells stored inside, posing a significant fire and explosion risk. Fire officials stressed that improperly handled lithium-ion batteries are highly volatile and can catch fire without warning.

Criminal summonses have since been issued against the building’s owner for multiple fire code and storage violations. Authorities are warning New Yorkers to avoid unlicensed repair shops, as the city has seen a sharp rise in fires caused by lithium-ion batteries in recent years.

The FDNY emphasized that while lithium-ion batteries are widely used in e-bikes, scooters, and electronics, they must be charged, repaired, and stored safely to prevent deadly accidents.
