Secretary of State Marco Rubio just delivered news that could kill one of the most dreaded government errands in America: standing in line for a first-time passport. Starting next year, Rubio announced, Americans will be able to apply for their very first passport entirely online through America.gov, a new AI-powered platform the administration unveiled as its answer to clunky, outdated government websites. Applicants will sign in securely through login.gov, then upload or snap a passport photo straight from their phone or computer, with facial verification built in to confirm identity. From there, the whole process, payment included, happens online, with real-time status tracking so people can watch their application move instead of wondering if it vanished into a government mailroom.

Rubio didn't hold back describing what the new system replaces: no printed forms, no awkward drugstore photo booth, no scheduled appointment, no waiting in line, and no middleman charging a fee for something that should be free and simple. The launch is part of a much bigger push by the Trump administration to fold the government's sprawling, scattered web presence, spread across tens of thousands of separate federal websites, into one unified, AI-driven front door for citizens. Officials are framing it as long-overdue modernization, but the plan is already drawing pushback from critics who worry about data security, identity theft, and how safe sensitive personal information will really be once it's centralized on a single AI-powered platform. For now, the administration's goal is for most Americans to be able to handle their passport needs on America.gov by the end of 2027.
