Israel Aerospace Industries is showing off a drone that its own makers call an airborne machine gun, and the internet cannot look away. The FIRE STORM (APUS MG) is a next-generation armed quadcopter that fuses machine-gun firepower with long endurance, with its multi-fuel engine giving it up to three hours in the air. IAI says it can lift up to 35 kilograms, needs only a minimal logistics footprint, and is built to travel with tactical units so immediate-response firepower is always overhead. The released footage runs through 3D renders, ground assembly, desert test flights, and thermal camera sequences where tracking overlays lock onto simulated figures at different ranges and altitudes.

The story got bigger this week, when IAI and SIG SAUER announced at the AUSA 2026 conference in Washington that they had completed a live-fire trial of the FIRE STORM 250 variant. That version carries SIG SAUER's M250 machine gun on a MICROLIGHT remote weapon station, with about 200 rounds and a total weapon system weight of roughly 24 kilograms. According to the companies, the drone hovered over a simulated battlefield, spotted targets with its onboard camera, and fired single shots and semi-automatic bursts from various ranges and altitudes. A human operator keeps control of every decision to open fire, and the system is pitched for close air support, border security, and protecting key sites, with several drones able to take turns to keep watch around the clock. Armed drones are already changing how small units fight, and a hovering machine gun that stays up for hours leaves a lot of people asking how far this technology will go.
