Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing political bloc has emerged as the largest grouping in Israel’s October 2026 general election, securing 53 seats in the 120-member Knesset but falling short of the 61 needed to form a governing majority. Netanyahu’s Likud party remains the single largest party with 27 seats, placing the prime minister in a leading position as political negotiations begin. However, the results have produced a fragmented parliament in which no political bloc has secured enough support to govern independently. Sky News Middle East Correspondent Adam Parsons described the outcome as a “weird election” in which “no one's really won,” reflecting the absence of a clear parliamentary majority. The opposition bloc stands at 48 seats, while Arab parties have secured a combined 19 seats, giving them a potentially significant role in the negotiations.

The results now set the stage for complicated coalition discussions as Netanyahu seeks to assemble enough support to remain at the head of Israel’s next government. Although his bloc finished ahead of its rivals, the 53-seat total leaves a gap of eight seats before reaching the parliamentary threshold required for a majority. The Arab parties' combined representation could become an important factor in determining the balance of power, depending on whether any political agreements or outside support emerge. Until a new coalition is formed, Netanyahu is expected to remain caretaker prime minister, potentially extending the government-formation process for weeks or even months. The political uncertainty comes as Israel continues to face significant regional security challenges, adding further importance to the negotiations over the country's next governing coalition.
