United Torah Judaism chairman MK Moshe Gafni declined to commit his party to supporting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the upcoming election, delivering a pointed message during a tour of Haredi educational institutions in Rehovot on Tuesday.

Asked about Netanyahu and the political alliances that could follow the election, Gafni said he was no longer prepared to make the commitment he had made in previous campaigns that his party would go with Netanyahu, remarking that he no longer knew “which party Netanyahu is in.”

The veteran Degel HaTorah leader also took aim at Shas during the visit. Addressing the political competition for Haredi voters, Gafni declared that his camp was “the most Haredi” and expressed confidence that it was gaining strength in the polls.

Gafni's remarks come as Israel's Haredi parties navigate an increasingly complicated relationship with Netanyahu and the broader right-wing bloc, following prolonged battles over the draft of bnei yeshivos and government funding for Haredi institutions.

Education funding was also a major theme of the Rehovot visit. Gafni criticized government officials and the legal establishment over funding affecting Haredi educational frameworks, declaring that while “the bureaucrats are against us,” the public remains with the Haredi parties.

The dispute comes amid a broader confrontation over Haredi education funding. Earlier this month, the Knesset Finance Committee approved roughly NIS 270 million in additional funding for Haredi education, although the High Court subsequently froze controversial transfers pending further review. The Attorney General has separately pushed for stricter conditions tying continued funding of Haredi education networks to compliance with core-curriculum and oversight requirements.

During his Rehovot tour, Gafni visited several Torah and educational institutions, including Talmud Torah HaBe'er, a yeshiva ketana, the Ma'alot Simcha seminary and a new municipal Haredi library currently under construction.

The visit comes as Degel HaTorah moves deeper into election mode, with questions surrounding the Haredi parties' future alliances — and particularly whether they will once again back Netanyahu — emerging as a significant issue ahead of the vote.
