Hasan Piker Defends Radical Ties: No Need for AOC or El-Sayed to Distance Themselves

Far-left streamer Hasan Piker pushed back hard in a recent ABC interview against the idea that Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed or Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez should distance themselves from him. When asked whether he would mind if the two Democrats “threw him under the bus,” Piker replied that there is no necessity for them to do so and questioned why anyone is engaging in “guilt by association.” The exchange comes as Republicans and even some Democrats continue to highlight Piker’s most extreme past statements, including his 2019 claim that “America deserved 9/11.”

That 2019 remark, made during a Twitch livestream, remains one of the most widely criticized comments in Piker’s record. He later described it as inappropriate and has attempted to frame it as a critique of American foreign policy, yet the original words continue to surface in political attacks. Piker has also faced scrutiny over other statements involving Hezbollah and related topics that many view as crossing into dangerous territory. These comments have fueled both Republican campaign messaging and internal Democratic discomfort about his visible role supporting El-Sayed’s Senate bid.

In Michigan’s closely watched Senate race, El-Sayed has appeared alongside Piker at campaign events while selectively disavowing specific remarks such as the 9/11 comment, calling them “dumb.” At the same time, he has resisted broader demands to cut ties or police every association. This approach has created ongoing tension within Democratic ranks, with some party figures urging clearer separation to protect the general-election effort against Republican nominee Mike Rogers. The dynamic underscores deeper questions about how far progressive candidates can lean into online radical influencers without alienating moderate and independent voters.

The continued association risks becoming a persistent liability for Democrats heading into the 2026 midterms. Voters concerned about national security, support for Israel, and basic American patriotism may see Piker’s defense of “guilt by association” as an unwillingness to confront extreme views. For a party already navigating internal divisions, the refusal to fully separate from such figures could complicate efforts to expand support beyond the progressive base. As the Michigan race heats up, the debate over Piker’s role serves as a clear reminder of the challenges posed by radical voices on the left.
