President Donald Trump had a brief and somewhat humorous exchange with reporters outside the White House on Wednesday after being asked about anti-American chants reportedly heard in Iraq’s parliament.

During the moment, an Iraqi reporter attempted to inform Trump that lawmakers in Baghdad had been shouting “Death to America” during a parliamentary session. Trump initially appeared to struggle to hear or understand the question.

“What did he say?” Trump asked, prompting a clarification from someone nearby repeating the phrase “Death to America.”

Trump then responded with a quip, saying, “That’s not a nice question,” before continuing on his way.

The exchange referenced reports from a March 7 session in Iraq’s parliament where several pro-Iran political factions, including members of the al-Sadiqoun bloc, chanted anti-American and anti-Israel slogans during heated discussions over regional tensions and U.S. military presence in the country.

The chants came amid escalating security concerns following rocket attacks targeting the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad’s Green Zone. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani condemned the embassy strike and reiterated that Iraqi authorities are responsible for protecting diplomatic missions under international law.

The brief interaction with Trump quickly circulated online, drawing mixed reactions. Supporters praised the president’s casual response and humor, while critics argued the situation highlighted the continuing tensions between Washington and factions within Iraq’s political landscape.

The United States currently maintains roughly 2,500 troops in Iraq as part of a coalition mission focused on counterterrorism and stability operations following the defeat of ISIS’s territorial control earlier in the decade.

The exchange underscores the complex relationship between Washington and Baghdad, where cooperation between governments continues even as some political groups openly express hostility toward the American military presence.
