Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo ignited political controversy after claiming that longtime activist and radio host Curtis Sliwa was a “total fraud” who helped cost him the 2025 New York City mayoral election. Speaking publicly about the results, Cuomo accused Sliwa of fabricating stories about the Guardian Angels and staging a fake NYPD kidnapping decades ago, arguing that Sliwa’s credibility issues should have disqualified him with voters.

Cuomo, who ran as an Independent after losing the Democratic primary, finished behind Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, who won the November 4 race with 50.4% of the vote. Sliwa, running as a Republican-leaning conservative candidate, captured roughly 7% of the vote—support Cuomo insists came largely from voters who might have otherwise backed him. According to Cuomo, this split in the non-socialist electorate handed Mamdani the victory and reshaped the direction of New York City politics.

The accusations reflect the broader frustration among moderates who watched a divided field clear the path for a far-left candidate to take control of the nation’s largest city. Critics argue that Cuomo’s Independent run fractured his own base, while supporters maintain that Sliwa’s presence acted as a spoiler in a race already marked by ideological polarization.

For many conservatives and pro-Israel New Yorkers, Mamdani’s victory signaled a concerning shift. His openly socialist platform and history of hostility toward U.S.-Israel relations have raised alarms about future city policies and national political implications. Cuomo’s latest remarks highlight the internal battles within New York’s political landscape, where fragmented opposition continues to allow radical candidates to gain power.

Whether Cuomo’s accusations will reshape public perception of Sliwa remains unclear, but the fallout underscores how fractured political coalitions can dramatically alter election outcomes. As New York moves forward under a newly empowered socialist leadership, the debate over responsibility for the result shows no signs of fading.
