The Israeli military says it killed four Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad operatives in strikes across the Gaza Strip on Saturday and Sunday, announcing the results on Monday. A Saturday strike in northern Gaza reportedly killed Muhammad Anan Muhammad Al-Rawaj, whom the IDF describes as the commander of a Nukhba cell in Hamas's military wing. On Sunday, strikes in northern, central and southern Gaza reportedly killed Fawzi Salam Odat Allah Sawarha, a Hamas sniper the IDF says helped advance attacks on its troops, along with two Islamic Jihad operatives, Alaa Abu Zaid and Hamdan Suleiman Ibrahim Abu Amra. The IDF also says it destroyed a structure in northern Gaza that was being used as a sniper position against its forces.
According to the military, the four men were preparing attacks on Israeli troops and civilians while working to rebuild their groups' capabilities, which it calls a violation of the ceasefire. It also says the strikes used precision munitions and aerial surveillance to reduce harm to civilians. The Nukhba Force is Hamas's elite unit, which led many of the incursions on October 7, 2023, so the targeting of one of its cell commanders carries heavy symbolic weight. All of these details come from the IDF and have not been independently verified. Separately, Gaza's Hamas-run Civil Defense agency reported that 13 people were killed and about 60 wounded in a 24-hour period, a figure that is not tied to the four men the IDF named. The strikes are likely to deepen the debate over how long the fragile ceasefire can hold.
