Fisherman's Catch Turns on Him — Octopus Clamps Onto His Face in Terrifying Video

A routine day of octopus fishing turned into a terrifying ordeal for Jesser Cervantes, a fisherman from Palawan, Philippines, after the very creature he had just caught turned the tables and latched itself onto his face. Video of the harrowing encounter has gone viral, showing the octopus wrapping its powerful, sucker-lined tentacles across Cervantes' head and mouth while he sat in a small boat at sea. For more than 30 agonizing seconds, he can be seen desperately grabbing at the tentacles with his bare hands, trying to pry the animal loose before it fully clamped down on his face.

Unable to free himself by hand, Cervantes reached for a cut piece of bamboo and used it to lever the octopus off his head, finally managing to peel the creature away from his mouth and eyes. Once freed, he released the octopus back into the sea rather than keeping it as part of his catch, despite the ordeal being part of his regular octopus fishing side work. Cervantes later described the experience as extremely painful, given the intense grip strength of the octopus's suction cups, but was quick to confirm to viewers that the harrowing footage was completely real and not staged for social media.

The incident, which unfolded in July 2026, is a vivid reminder of just how strong and defensively aggressive octopuses can be when they feel threatened or cornered, particularly when caught by hand in shallow coastal waters. Marine experts note that an octopus's grip, powered by hundreds of individual suckers, can generate surprising force even from a relatively small animal, making close-quarters encounters like this one far more dangerous than they might first appear. For now, Cervantes has emerged from his face-to-face standoff with the sea creature shaken but unharmed, and the video stands as a wild, cautionary tale for anyone who thinks octopus fishing is a low-risk trade.
