A single monument in Toulouse has become one of the most talked-about images of France's day of protest. On Saturday, October 17, 2026, photos shared online showed the city's statue of Joan of Arc covered with a yellow vest and a Palestinian flag, with one person seen standing beside it. Video circulating on social media then appears to show a young man climbing the statue and pulling the flag down. The bronze equestrian monument, which stands on Place Jeanne d'Arc and dates from 1922, depicts the national heroine in armor holding a banner high, which helps explain why the moment hit such a nerve.
The scene took place during nationwide demonstrations over the cost of living, backed by unions, students, and revived Yellow Vest groups, and most marchers across France protested peacefully. The Interior Ministry reported violence by hooded individuals in several cities, including Toulouse, Paris, Marseille, Rennes, and Angers, with at least 272 arrests nationwide. It is not yet confirmed who placed the vest and flag on the statue or whether they were connected to the organizers of the protest, and the video of the climb has not been independently verified. Palestinian flags also appeared among some demonstrators in other cities, but the protests were driven mainly by prices, fuel costs, and school conditions. The open questions now are whether authorities will look into the draping of the monument and how much attention this one image will draw in a country already on edge.
