Brig. Gen. (res.) Reem Aminoach, a prominent advocate for increasing Haredi enlistment in the IDF, is drawing attention to an obstacle often dismissed in the public debate: the potentially severe consequences that military service can have for a Haredi bochur’s standing within his community and for his family’s shidduchim.

In a newly released video, Aminoach poses the provocative question: “Why does the Haredi who enlists today screw over his family?”

Aminoach argues that the question of why Haredim do not enlist cannot be understood solely through the conventional debate over military service and Torah learning. Instead, he points to the social consequences facing an individual who breaks with the accepted norms of his community.

Those consequences, he argues, can extend beyond the person who enlists to his siblings and broader family, particularly when it comes to shidduchim.

The concern is not merely theoretical. Testimony presented during previous Knesset discussions on Haredi enlistment has described military service as carrying a potentially significant shidduch price for Haredi recruits and even their siblings.

Aminoach’s comments are particularly notable because he is not an opponent of Haredi enlistment. Rather, he has advocated bringing substantially more Haredim into military service.

His argument is that those seeking increased enlistment must understand the internal realities of Haredi society instead of assuming that issuing draft orders alone will overcome decades of social separation from the military.

The broader debate has increasingly focused on whether the IDF can create frameworks that allow recruits to enter military service without losing their Haredi identity or their place within their families and communities.

At a previous Knesset discussion on the issue, participants similarly argued that a Haredi who enlists may pay a greater social price than other recruits and that the military must provide conditions appropriate to the community if it expects enlistment to grow.

Aminoach’s latest video therefore highlights an unusual point of agreement across opposing sides of the draft debate: even a leading advocate of Haredi enlistment acknowledges that, under present circumstances, the decision to enlist can carry consequences extending far beyond the individual recruit.

His conclusion, however, remains fundamentally pro-enlistment. Aminoach presents these consequences as barriers that should be overcome in order to facilitate greater Haredi participation in the military, rather than as an argument against enlistment itself.
