A dramatic rescue played out on New York City's RFK Bridge after a worker fell about 20 feet onto scaffolding beneath the roadway. FDNY and NYPD crews responded and carried out a rope rescue operation to bring the injured man safely back up to the bridge. He suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital. The rescue shut down bridge traffic and caused major delays for drivers.
Rope rescues like this require careful work, because rescuers have to reach an injured person on scaffolding without making his injuries worse or risking another fall. The scaffolding appears to have stopped the worker from falling farther, though the full extent of his injuries has not been released. It is not yet clear what caused the fall, whether the man was wearing a harness, or who employed him. Officials have also not said how long the closure lasted or when traffic returned to normal. Those answers are likely to come out as the incident is looked into.
