Secretary of State Marco Rubio used a stop in Reykjavik to make a direct pitch for closer economic ties between the United States and Iceland, singling out Icelandic companies doing what he called very unique things that could have a place in the American market. Rubio also flipped the pitch the other direction, telling reporters that American firms could find real, positive economic opportunities by investing in Iceland itself. The comments came during a joint press availability as part of his October 6 visit to the Icelandic capital, one stop on a broader trip also touching Arctic security and defense cooperation. Rubio pointed to sectors like geothermal power and pharmaceuticals as areas ripe for deeper commercial collaboration between the two countries.

The economic overtures arrive alongside a clear strategic subtext, with Iceland's position in the North Atlantic making it a key outpost for monitoring activity and deterring potential adversaries in the region. That dual focus, business opportunity paired with security interest, has defined much of Rubio's broader approach to smaller, strategically located allies. For Iceland, a small economy with an outsized geographic footprint, the attention from a top U.S. official signals Washington's growing interest in cementing both commercial and defense relationships there. The visit suggests investment talks and security cooperation are increasingly being treated as two sides of the same strategic coin.
