Democratic Senator Chris Murphy says the Pentagon blocked him from entering Al Udeid Air Base, the largest U.S. military installation in the Middle East, during a congressional trip to the region, and separately refused to arrange a briefing for him on the ongoing Iran war. Speaking to reporters in Riyadh, Murphy called the denial unprecedented and unconstitutional, accusing the Trump administration of actively working to hide the war's costs, casualties, and impact from both Congress and the American public. Murphy, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he made the trip specifically to see firsthand the damage the war has caused to U.S. facilities in the region and how it has strained relationships with regional partners, noting he is the first Democratic lawmaker to visit the Gulf since the conflict began.

The Pentagon has pushed back on Murphy's framing, with a senior defense official telling reporters that the senator's office was informed before the trip that he would not receive Defense Department support to access Al Udeid, pointing to a March directive from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth restricting travel to the area. The official said the policy applies evenly regardless of party affiliation, rejecting the idea that Murphy was singled out. Despite being turned away from the base, Murphy still met with Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during the trip, with the State Department under Secretary Marco Rubio helping arrange those diplomatic meetings, a contrast Murphy highlighted as he accused the Pentagon specifically of stonewalling congressional oversight of the war.
