A powerful lake-effect snow event driven by an Arctic outbreak has plunged large portions of upstate New York into dangerous whiteout conditions, severely disrupting travel and prompting warnings across the region. From January 18 through January 24, intense bands of snow have battered communities around Buffalo and Watertown, reducing visibility to near zero and turning highways into treacherous corridors of ice and blowing snow.

Video footage from the storm shows vehicles creeping along barely visible roadways as heavy snowfall and gusty winds erase lane markings and landmarks. Authorities have urged drivers to stay off the roads as rapidly changing conditions make travel unpredictable and hazardous, particularly during peak snowfall bursts.

On-the-ground reporting from storm tracker Mark Sudduth in Manlius, New York, captured the severity of the conditions, with snow whipping across open areas and accumulating rapidly on untreated roads. Emergency crews have been working continuously to clear highways and respond to weather-related incidents, while state officials stress that even experienced winter drivers face heightened risk during lake-effect whiteouts.

The prolonged Arctic outbreak has sustained frigid temperatures, allowing lake-effect bands to regenerate repeatedly as cold air passes over the warmer waters of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Forecasters warn that sudden drops in visibility and rapidly deteriorating road conditions remain the primary danger, especially for long-haul truck drivers and commuters.

As the storm system continues to impact the region, residents are being advised to prepare for extended travel delays, possible road closures, and continued hazardous conditions until the lake-effect bands weaken and temperatures begin to moderate.
