Paddleboarders Swept Out to Sea Rescued Using Umbrella as Sail

Two paddleboarders are safe after being swept out into the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Pasco County, Florida, this week, prompting a rescue effort by local law enforcement. The pair were caught by strong ocean currents on Tuesday and carried away from shore while out on their paddleboards. With no way to paddle back against the current, the two improvised a makeshift sail using a beach umbrella in an attempt to steer themselves back toward land as they waited for help.

Video captured during the incident shows the paddleboarders holding up the umbrella in open water, using it to catch the wind as rescuers raced to reach them. The Pasco County Sheriff's Office worked alongside the New Port Richey Police Department's marine unit in a coordinated rescue effort, ultimately locating the stranded pair and bringing them safely back to shore. Officials credited the close cooperation between the two agencies' marine units for the quick resolution of the incident.

The rescue serves as a reminder of how quickly conditions on the water can change along Florida's Gulf Coast, where ocean currents can carry paddleboarders, swimmers, and other beachgoers far from shore in a short amount of time. Local authorities continue to urge water recreation enthusiasts to stay aware of current conditions and to carry proper safety equipment before heading out, even on what may appear to be a calm day on the water.
