UBTECH and FAW-Volkswagen have signed a strategic deal to develop and test humanoid robots for car-plant logistics, including sorting, handling, and collaborative tasks on the factory floor. The agreement, announced in early October 2026, builds directly on earlier cooperation that began in 2024 when Walker S robots started training on FAW-Volkswagenโs Qingdao production lines. Walker S Lite later took on vehicle quality-inspection duties at the same plant, proving the robots could operate in real manufacturing environments. The new focus on logistics marks a clear expansion of intelligent automation beyond inspection into the movement of parts and materials. UBTECHโs wheeled Cruzr series, including the industrial Cruzr Y1, will plug into the same multi-robot coordination system as the bipedal Walker models, creating a mixed fleet of different form factors.
The supply side is already ramping up. UBTECHโs Liuzhou factory began production on September 12 with a designed capacity of more than 10,000 robots a year and a takt time of roughly one unit every ten minutes. This capacity comes as the gap between limited pilot projects and broader factory deployment continues to narrow. Automakers are increasingly looking for flexible automation that can adapt to changing vehicle designs and production needs. The partnership positions humanoid and wheeled robots as practical tools for the repetitive, physical work that still fills many car plants. If the tests succeed, the collaboration could accelerate the shift from demonstration units to everyday industrial use across Chinese manufacturing lines.
