A terrifying video sweeping across social media appears to show a volcanic eruption tearing through an Indonesian town, complete with towering lava fountains, thick ash plumes, and residents fleeing in a panic between houses and parked vehicles. It's the kind of footage that grabs attention instantly, and it's been shared widely with claims that it captures the recent eruption of Anak Krakatau, the volcano sitting in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra. The problem is, fact-checkers have already picked the clip apart, and what they found tells a very different story than the one racing around the internet.

Multiple independent verification teams, including AFP and India Today, have concluded the footage doesn't show what it claims to. In some versions, analysis points to AI generation, with detection tools flagging a high probability that both the video and its audio were artificially created, complete with telltale glitches like eruption flashes that don't appear on the screens of phones supposedly filming the event. In another widely circulated version, the footage turns out to be years old, originally filmed by a volcano photographer during a real eruption at the same volcano back in October 2018, then recirculated with fresh captions claiming it shows the current activity. Either way, the common thread is the same: what people are watching isn't a live record of what's actually happening right now.

The geography alone gives the hoax away. Anak Krakatau sits on a small, uninhabited island out in the Sunda Strait, meaning there simply aren't any houses, streets, or fleeing residents anywhere near the volcano's base for a camera to capture. That single detail undercuts the entire premise of the viral clip, since any footage showing a nearby town or panicked crowds running past buildings couldn't possibly be filmed at this location. It's a reminder that dramatic visuals alone aren't proof of authenticity, and a quick check of basic facts about a place can often unravel a fabricated story faster than any technical analysis.

None of this is to say Anak Krakatau hasn't been active, because it genuinely has. The real eruption in early September 2026 sent volcanic ash soaring to altitudes of roughly 50,000 feet, disrupted flights, and prompted authorities to establish a three-kilometer exclusion zone around the volcano as a safety precaution. Ash reportedly spread more than 150 kilometers away, affecting areas as far as Jakarta and leaving travelers stranded after nearby airports closed. The actual event is serious enough on its own, which makes the spread of fabricated, more sensational footage all the more unnecessary, and a reminder to verify dramatic viral videos with credible sources before sharing them further.
