U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth defended the military operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, using blunt language to convey the administration’s commitment to national security and “peace through strength.” Speaking at a press conference, Hegseth compared the Maduro operation to previous U.S. warnings against Iran, emphasizing that repeated defiance and threats will no longer be tolerated.

“Nicolás Maduro had his chance, just like Iran had their chance, until they didn't and until he didn't. He F'd around and he found out,” Hegseth stated, underscoring the administration’s position that decisive action is warranted when rogue regimes threaten U.S. interests. He framed the operation as a targeted response to Maduro’s ongoing drug trafficking, gang violence, and illegal control over Venezuela’s oil resources.

The operation followed a series of U.S. strikes launched around December 27, 2025, aimed at Venezuelan infrastructure near Caracas. These strikes weakened Maduro’s defensive capabilities and cleared the path for the rapid extraction of the former president. Reports indicate that over 80 regime loyalists were killed during the operation, while Maduro was apprehended with minimal American casualties.

Hegseth highlighted the broader strategic rationale, noting that the mission was designed to halt the flow of narcotics into the United States, stabilize a region wracked by economic collapse, and facilitate the installation of a transitional U.S.-overseen government. The move comes amid a mass migration crisis, with millions of Venezuelans displaced over the past decade due to economic mismanagement and authoritarian rule.

The Secretary of War framed the raid as part of a consistent pattern of American responses to rogue regimes: sustained pressure, precision strikes, and the willingness to act decisively when diplomacy fails. By drawing parallels to Iran, Hegseth reinforced the message that America will enforce its national security interests directly and without hesitation.

Hegseth’s remarks reflect the Trump administration’s commitment to a robust foreign policy posture, signaling to both allies and adversaries that threats to American security and economic interests will meet immediate, overwhelming, and effective response.
