Newly released video footage shows Alex Pretti violently confronting federal immigration officers in Minneapolis just 11 days before he was fatally shot during a separate encounter with Customs and Border Protection agents, according to multiple media reports. The video, posted publicly on Wednesday, captures a January 13 incident involving Pretti and uniformed ICE agents on a city street.

Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, is seen in the footage shouting at agents, kicking their vehicle, and damaging a taillight. As tensions escalate, an agent exits the vehicle and tackles Pretti to the ground while bystanders scream for the officers to stop. Other agents appear to deploy gas or smoke to control the crowd as the confrontation intensifies.

At least three agents struggle to restrain Pretti, who ultimately breaks free and rushes toward nearby individuals. During the chaos, a firearm is visible tucked into the back of Pretti’s waistband, though the video does not show him reaching for the weapon. A representative for Pretti’s family confirmed that the man in the footage is indeed Pretti and stated that the family was already aware of the incident.

The release of the video adds critical context to the events surrounding Pretti’s death on January 24, when he was shot during an encounter with CBP agents amid heightened anti-ICE protests in Minnesota. His death, along with that of another individual, Renee Good, has become a flashpoint in the broader national debate over federal immigration enforcement and resistance by local officials in so-called sanctuary jurisdictions.

The incident unfolds against the backdrop of President Trump’s aggressive immigration enforcement operations, particularly in sanctuary cities where local leaders have been criticized for limiting cooperation with federal authorities. Democratic officials, including Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, have faced mounting scrutiny from law enforcement advocates who argue that political rhetoric and policy decisions have emboldened protests that turned volatile.

While the newly surfaced footage does not alter the status of ongoing investigations into Pretti’s fatal shooting, it directly challenges narratives portraying him as a passive or uninvolved actor prior to his death. The Department of Homeland Security has placed the agents involved in the later shooting on administrative leave, and a local judge has ordered the preservation of all relevant evidence.

The video underscores the escalating risks faced by federal agents operating in hostile environments and highlights the consequences of sustained political resistance to immigration enforcement. As investigations continue, the footage is likely to play a significant role in shaping public understanding of the events leading up to Pretti’s death and the broader debate over law, order, and federal authority.
