Rookie Lifeguard, 16, Battles Brutal Surf to Save Drowning Boy in Santa Cruz

A routine day of beach photography turned into a dramatic rescue at Santa Cruz, California, on July 25, 2026, after photographer Scott Vander Dussen noticed something alarming in the surf. While capturing images along the coastline, he spotted a head repeatedly appearing and disappearing beneath violent, churning waves. Recognizing the danger, he immediately alerted a nearby lifeguard, setting off a rescue that would soon capture the attention of millions online. The person struggling in the water turned out to be a 10-year-old boy who had been swept up while riding his bodyboard in conditions far rougher than they appeared from shore.

What followed was captured on video and later shared widely: a young lifeguard, just 16 years old and in his very first season on the job, fighting through relentless surf to reach the boy. Footage shows him grabbing hold of the child and refusing to let go, even as powerful waves repeatedly slammed into both of them. Several bystanders attempted to wade in and help but were knocked down by the force of the water and retreated to safety, leaving the young lifeguard to press on alone. Waving off further attempts at assistance, he held his grip through wave after wave until he was finally able to bring the boy safely to shore.

The rescue has since racked up millions of views and a wave of public praise, with many calling for formal recognition of the teenage lifeguard's composure and determination under extreme conditions. What makes the story especially striking is the lifeguard's inexperience on paper, being brand new to the role, contrasted with the seasoned instinct and grit he displayed in a genuinely life-threatening situation. For Vander Dussen, whose quick thinking behind the camera helped set the rescue in motion, and for the young lifeguard whose courage closed it out, the moment has become an unlikely but well-earned viral triumph.
