Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree publicly claimed responsibility Saturday for a barrage of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones fired at what he called sensitive sites in Saudi Arabia's capital, Riyadh, along with Aramco oil facilities in the port city of Yanbu. Saree declared the operations successful and said the strikes ignited large fires, a claim that lined up with dramatic footage showing a thick column of black smoke and visible flames rising from a fuel depot near King Khalid International Airport. Saudi authorities confirmed their air defenses intercepted a ballistic missile aimed at the capital, while Riyadh issued overnight hostile aerial threat alerts and briefly disrupted flights at the kingdom's main airport before declaring the danger over by morning.

The strike marks a major escalation in Yemen's long-running civil war, representing the first time Houthi attacks have visibly reached Riyadh since fighting between the group and the Saudi-backed coalition intensified earlier this year. The Houthis frame their attacks as retaliation for Saudi airstrikes on Yemen's capital, Sanaa, while Saudi Arabia continues to back Yemen's internationally recognized government against the Iran-aligned movement, which now controls the strategically vital Bab al-Mandab strait. The claimed strike follows weeks of rising hostilities, including a September 8 attack that hit energy facilities across four Saudi cities and injured 73 people, prompting roughly 50 retaliatory strikes from the Saudi-led coalition, leaving open the question of how Riyadh will respond to an attack striking so close to its own capital.
