The U.S. economy grew at an annualized rate of 1.5 percent in the second quarter, according to the Commerce Department’s advance estimate. That pace came in below consensus forecasts of roughly 2.0 to 2.3 percent and marked a slowdown from the 2.1 percent growth recorded in the first quarter. The softer headline figure was driven largely by a surge in imports, a decline in government spending, and inventory adjustments. Analyst Michael McKee broke down the data, noting the contrast between the top-line number and stronger underlying trends.

Despite the weaker overall reading, private-sector activity remained solid. Consumer spending accelerated to a 3.2 percent pace, while business investment rose a robust 8.4 percent. These gains point to healthy domestic demand even as temporary factors weighed on the broader GDP calculation. Markets responded positively, with stock futures rising and Treasury yields edging lower following the release.

A single quarterly figure does not capture the full picture of economic momentum. Strong consumer and business spending under the current administration reflects confidence in the real economy. Policymakers will continue focusing on measures that support domestic production, investment, and wage growth while monitoring future revisions and incoming data for a clearer trajectory.
