Lakewood Township, New Jersey, is reportedly preparing to discontinue municipal garbage collection services for private schools and houses of worship beginning January 1, 2027, a cost-cutting measure that will directly affect hundreds of yeshivos, shuls, and other religious institutions throughout the community.

According to a report published by Matzav, the decision is expected to save the township approximately $2 million annually as local officials work to address a substantial municipal budget shortfall.

Under the planned change, affected institutions will be required to make their own arrangements for garbage removal, potentially placing additional financial pressure on yeshivos, shuls, and other mosdos that rely on municipal sanitation services.

The new expenses could present particular challenges for institutions already managing significant operating costs, including building maintenance, utilities, and other essential services.

Lakewood is home to one of the largest Chareidi communities in the United States, with numerous Torah institutions serving thousands of families. The elimination of municipal trash collection for private schools and houses of worship would represent a significant change in services provided to these institutions.

The reported policy is scheduled to take effect at the beginning of 2027, leaving affected institutions approximately two months to prepare alternative waste collection arrangements.
