Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh declined to discuss any conversation with President Trump after the central bank delivered a unanimous 25-basis-point interest rate hike, lifting the target range to 3.75 percent to 4 percent. The move marks the first increase since 2023. When pressed on the presidential discussion, Warsh replied that he had nothing to offer on that topic. He instead focused on the policy’s impact, stating that the least well-off Americans stand to gain the most from stable prices.

Warsh, who took office in May 2026 as a Trump appointee, framed the decision squarely around the Federal Reserve’s inflation-fighting mandate. His refusal to engage on White House interactions underscores the ongoing tension between political pressure for lower rates and the central bank’s emphasis on independence. The remarks leave open questions about the nature of any recent discussions with the president and how future policy decisions will navigate similar pressures while inflation remains elevated. For now Warsh’s message centers on protecting household purchasing power through tighter policy.
