NEW YORK — A developing coastal storm could bring powerful winds and periods of rain to New York City and Long Island just as Sukkos begins, potentially creating difficult conditions for sukkahs across the region.

Sukkos begins Friday evening and continues through the weekend, while forecasters expect the coastal storm's main impacts from Friday through Sunday.

The National Weather Service currently forecasts winds in New York City gusting into the low 30s mph Friday and into Shabbos, along with chances of rain. Conditions could be considerably stronger farther east on Long Island.

NBC New York's Storm Team 4 says Suffolk County could see wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph, with persistent northeast winds also raising concerns for coastal flooding, rough surf and beach erosion.

The timing could pose particular concerns for sukkahs and outdoor Sukkos plans across Jewish communities in the region. Residents should continue monitoring updated forecasts as Yom Tov approaches, as the exact track and strength of the developing system remain uncertain.

Forecast models still disagree over how close the storm will track to the coast. A track closer to the region would bring stronger winds and heavier rain, while a system remaining farther offshore would significantly reduce the impact.
