Jewish Institutions in Albania Threatened Amid Unrest; Chief Rabbi Urges Calm

Albania's Jewish community is facing heightened security concerns after threatening messages circulated on social media calling for attacks against Jewish institutions, including the country's only synagogue, amid ongoing anti-government demonstrations.
The threats have raised alarm among members of the small Jewish community, although the demonstrations themselves have not been directed specifically against Jews.
As tensions continue across the country, Albania's Chief Rabbi and Chabad shliach, Rabbi Yoel Kaplan, has sought to reassure the community, expressing confidence that the Albanian people and authorities will protect Jewish institutions and preserve the country's longstanding relationship with its Jewish residents.
Rabbi Kaplan emphasized that the threatening messages do not reflect the character of the Albanian population, which has a history of friendship and solidarity with the Jewish people.
He pointed to Albania's remarkable record during the Holocaust, when local citizens sheltered Jews and risked their own lives to protect them from Nazi persecution.
That protection was closely connected to Besa, the traditional Albanian code of honor emphasizing the obligation to keep one's word and safeguard those who seek refuge.
According to Rabbi Kaplan, the same values that inspired Albanians to protect Jews during the Holocaust continue to shape the relationship between the country's Jewish community and the wider population.
Meanwhile, photographs published by local media show a police vehicle positioned near a Jewish institution in Tirana as authorities remain attentive to security concerns surrounding the ongoing unrest.
The developments come as Albania experiences widespread demonstrations against the government, with protests and clashes drawing increased attention to public safety.
Despite the disturbing online rhetoric, Jewish community leaders have expressed confidence that the threats will not undermine Jewish life in the country.
Rabbi Kaplan's message has emphasized calm, unity, and trust in the Albanian people's historic commitment to protecting their Jewish neighbors.
